Let’s Dish About Hair!
Hair journeys are personal; and no two stories are the same. Some women prefer to remain natural, while others appreciate the versatility of extensions. Some even prefer to go back and forth between the two—letting their heart (or stylist) point them in the right direction.
And while some of these women may be candid about their journey, it doesn’t change the fact that their story and decisions are personal in nature.
Dynasty Premium Hair has interviewed several 20-something women who range the gamut with regard to their hair preferences. Some sport their premium hair religiously, while others have decided to re-explore their natural, kinky, roots.
In any case, each of these ladies have had much experience when it comes to wearing weave. Check out some of their answers, below!
When looking for hair, what do you pay the most attention to?
Lesley (South Carolina): I used to look for texture and grade. I needed to make sure it was natural, real hair. Even though it's "dead"—because it's not connected to roots anymore—I needed it to be real for the texture to last longer. The better the hair, the longer you can keep it in; and it will not get messy or start looking like Rasta dreads. Haha. Seriously, it will get nasty if you don't [invest] in extensions.
Erica (Virginia): When looking for hair, I often look for a good length, texture, something that won’t tangle or bunch up easily… and something that will be comfortable in any weather.
London (Connecticut): Texture, referrals and shedding!
Have extensions ever had a negative effect on your natural hair?
Lesley: My extensions never had a negative impact on my hair because I went to someone who knew what she was doing. She sewed my hair in properly. I did have shedding, but that was dead hair that needed to be cut anyways. Once I washed my real hair, [I realized that] my hair had actually grown!
Can you briefly describe your hair journey?
London: I've always had long hair—but too much of anything is never enough. I wear extensions to give my hair a break from heat/chemicals. [I am] trying to keep it healthy, with as little damage as possible.
Lesley: I've always had shoulder length or longer hair. Always kept it straight and permed. It wasn't until my junior year in college when I decided to go natural and stop the perms. I let my hair grow out for 4 years. My hair grew really long—past my shoulders—but I wanted longer hair so I decided to try weave. And, overall, it was a great experience. Longer hair for me, and easier to handle. Then, because locs have always been beautiful to me, I [decided to go] for it. If I could, I would go back and forth [between] weave and locs, but sew-ins are not good for dread locs.
Erica: My hair journey has definitely been just that. I have had relaxers, horrible haircuts and I have been every color of the rainbow. I have been natural for almost 10 years and I will continue to be natural; while wearing weave.
